If you live in a
climate with extended periods of either cold temperatures or warm temperatures
(or both), then proper attic ventilation is important to the longevity and
performance of your roofing system. In
fact, asphalt shingle manufacturers’ warranties may require minimum levels of
attic ventilation as a condition for coverage.
The primary
benefits of attic ventilation in the cold months is the elimination of moisture
that may penetrate the attic from inside the home (showers, laundry, cooking,
etc.) possibly causing condensation that might damage the roof sheathing and
ice dam creation. In the warm months
proper ventilation will assist in moderating both temperatures within the attic
(helping to protect any stored items) and the roof surface itself thereby lowering
energy costs and increasing roof life.
Attic ventilation
can either be achieved by passive ventilation or powered ventilation
systems. Passive systems are by far the
most common systems and they operate by having air vents on the roof that allow
hot air to escape. Powered systems also
have air vents on the roof but they have powered fans that assist in removing
the hot air within the attic. Crucial to
the operation of both systems is adequate ventilation areas in the eaves.
