Why We Love Fireplaces

Did you ever wonder why so many people, perhaps you included, enjoy curling up in a favorite chair in front of a crackling fire in a fireplace?  Well, apparently scientists have also wondered about this.  And research from The University of Alabama may shed some light on the reasons.

One of the results of the research is that watching a fire actually lowers blood pressure by an average of 5%.  And the longer participants watched a fire, the more relaxed they became.  While this result may seem intuitive, the researchers also found that those that watched a fire without sound actually had their blood pressure increase.

So what accounts for the soothing affect of a fire on most people?  Researchers hypothesize that the act of sitting by a fireplace may have the effect of focusing our attention and calming us.  And this calming affect may be a remnant of our pre-historic selves when humans felt safe and warm around a fire as well as providing social bonds.  The researchers even pointed out that pre-historic humans probably enjoyed fire long before they even learned how to start one (it’s good to see that some things don’t change!).
