Know the Warning Signs of a Roof Collapse

Nearly all homeowners, thankfully, will never experience a roof collapse event at home or elsewhere during their life.  Nonetheless, with recent changes in weather patterns, it is always a good idea to be informed and knowledgeable about the warning signs of a potential collapse in order to be able to protect yourself, your family and others from such an event that could cause serious injury or death.

The first thing to understand is that a collapse can occur during anytime of the year.  While most collapses happen during an abundance of snow or other frozen precipitation, sometimes the collapse is the result of repeated exposure to excessive weight on the roof which over time results in a gradual weakening of the roofing structure until it unexpectedly collapses.  Flat roofs and lower sloped roofs are particularly susceptible to collapse.

If you notice any of the following, then please contact Feazel immediately:

·         exterior masonry or siding that is cracked beyond normal settling
·         sections of shingles that are sagging or a sagging interior ceiling
·         bowed and/or bent pipes in ceilings
·         bent or rippled framing or roof support including trusses
·         doors or windows which open on their own or are difficult to close or open
·         if in a commercial building, sprinkler heads that have dropped below the ceiling tiles

Periodic maintenance of your entire roofing system is the best preventative medicine for any and all issues related to roofs.  This includes removing debris, keeping gutters clear, and repairing any needed areas as soon as possible.  And, removing excessive snow and ice accumulation in the winter is a must.

Preparing for Installation of a Shingle Roof

When the day comes for the installation of a new shingle roof on a home the typical homeowner is usually somewhat eager or somewhat concerned about the installation process.  Homeowners that had been planning for a new roof to replace their obsolete one are usually the more excited ones; those that unexpectedly need to replace their roof due to a windstorm or hailstorm event are usually a little more anxious.  Either way, both homeowners will be more at ease from an understanding of how to best prepare for the installation.

The most important thing to remember is that the installation will create a construction area at your home.  In order to create an effective construction zone all of the materials that will be used on the job need to be located as close to the home as possible.  This will require access to the yard and driveway which means that all vehicles will need to be removed from the driveway and anything located close to the perimeter of the property will need to be relocated elsewhere for the duration of the installation.

During working hours all children and pets that are at home need to remain in the home in a safe location.  Of course when there is a need during work hours for coming and going to the home, or pets that need walks, etc., your Feazel job foreman will arrange with you for those activities to take place safely.  Unfortunately, the replacement of a roof is a noisy endeavor with nail guns, hammers, etc., so occupants in the home should be aware of that.

One of the most common concerns we hear about is the debris from the roof removal and installation process and how will that be handled.  Your Feazel professionals will insure the removal of all debris both on an ongoing basis and at the completion of the job.  Please understand that some debris will remain in the yard until the Feazel superintendent does a thorough inspection at the completion of work both for debris and the completion of the job.

Feazel’s mission is to be the top choice for residential home services in Ohio by delivering the best customer service and stress-free buying experience in the home improvement industry.  We strive to maintain our highly regarded reputation earned over the past 28+ years.  We encourage you to think of Feazel first when you need a roof replacement.

Benefits of Proper Roof Insulation

It is hard to underestimate the numerous benefits of proper roof insulation at your home.  Installing the appropriate amount of roof insulation specified for the characteristics of your home is a wise investment that will provide dividends for many years to come.

The benefit that is mentioned most often when discussing roof insulation is the energy cost savings realized from upgrading insulation levels.  From an economic standpoint this is certainly the primary benefit.  The cost of upgrading roof insulation can be recouped in energy savings within approximately one year in many cases.   Another benefit of good roof insulation is the prevention of mold and rot both of which are very serious problems.  When heat escapes it can cause accumulated moisture which in turn can develop into mold or rot.

Additionally, good insulation can prevent improper melting of snow from your roof during the winter.  If you have numerous icicle formations, if snow is melting off some sections of your roof faster than others; or if your home is snow free before your neighbors home, then those are signs that heat is escaping through the attic.  These conditions can sometimes lead to ice damming on your roof which can in turn cause leaks inside the home and damage to the roof itself.  Finally, proper roof insulation can provide better heating and cooling comfort throughout the entire home.

Feazel’s trained and certified specialists are experts in the proper insulation of roofs.  If you have any concerns contact us for a free roof inspection.

Feazel Remembers 28 Years of Service

It is sometimes difficult to remember all of the highlights since our humble beginnings in 1988.  And the fact that we have completed over 60,000 projects since then.  During our 28 years in business we have continued to expand both our geographic service area and the number of services we provide all with a mission to deliver the best customer experience and stress free buying experience.  But sometimes we stop and notice just like everyone else how fast time passes and how we occasionally wish we could just make time stand still.

In order to put into perspective how long Feazel has been serving customers it might help to remember the world in 1988.  The average price of a new home was only $91,600. The average new car was $10,400.  A movie ticket was $3.50.

But it seems that some items cost about the same as they do today – like a PC from 1988 cost $1,249 (but was not near as powerful as today).  Still, looking just at the price of things doesn’t tell the whole story.

It was a great year for fun films in 1988.  “Big”, “Twins”, “Beetlejuice” and “A Fish Called Wanda” kept us all laughing as Mike and Todd Feazel worked to start their new business.  And serious efforts like “Rain Man” and “Dangerous Liaisons” were very popular with audiences.

A soon to be appreciated but then relatively unknown talent came on the scene in 1988 and reminded us all of the mystery and sometimes emotionally powerful context of the passage of time when Stephen Hawking published “A Brief History of Time”.  It doesn’t seem like 28 years ago the book appeared on the scene but that is what is interesting to many people: that some past events seem like yesterday and others like a very long time ago.

In 2016 and beyond Feazel continues to look forward to continuing their history of excellence long into the future.  Please contact us to learn more about our full line of residential home services.
